Marshall Bruce Mathers III alias Eminem ou Slim Shady est un musicien, producteur de rap et acteur américain né le 17 octobre 1972 à Kansas City, Missouri.
Révélé par Dr. Dre, Eminem est reconnu pour son talent dans l'emploi des figures de sonorités et en particulier pour son maniement habile de l'allitération (le magazine américain Rolling Stone l'a surnommé The Alliterator[1]), de l'assonance ou du jeu de mots entre autres. Eminem est aussi capable de varier la vitesse de sa voix et de changer de style de nombreuses fois sur une même chanson.
Avec l'énorme succès de son album The Marshall Mathers LP sorti en mai 2000 et sa nomination pour quatre Grammy Awards, dont l' « album de l'année », des associations comme le GLAAD ont dénoncé certains de ses textes les jugeant homophobes, tandis que d'autres dénoncent la violence extrême de certains titres. Néanmoins, Eminem a été couvert d'éloges par la communauté hip-hop et par le poète Seamus Heaney[2] en tant que rimeur hors pair (lyrical ability 3 ).
Bien qu' Eminem ne se considère pas comme un artiste engagé politiquement dans ses chansons, en 2004 et avant l'élection présidentielle, il sort la chanson Mosh, brûlot anti-Bush qui dénonce aussi sa décision d'aller faire la guerre en Irak.
